USS Arizona Memorial

At Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, the USS Arizona Memorial stands above the sunken battleship USS Arizona, where 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed in the Japanese attack of December 7, 1941, still rest. Reached only by boat, the structure spans the wreck without touching it, preserving the site as both grave and place of remembrance. Dedicated in 1962 after years of public and private efforts, it was designed by Alfred Preis with a symbolic form meant to suggest defeat and ultimate victory. With its visitor center and annual presidential tributes, it remains a powerful national site tied to World War II.
