Green Swamp is a major wetland in southeastern North Carolina, extending across Brunswick and Columbus counties and protected in part as a National Natural Landmark and preserve. Its importance centers on a rare wet longleaf pine savanna, where damp, nutrient-poor soils support specialized plant life. The area is especially noted for one of the largest wild populations of the Venus flytrap, along with pitcher plants, butterworts, bladderworts, and sundews adapted to capture insects. It also provides valuable wetland habitat for migrating birds and other wildlife along the Atlantic Flyway and remains the tribal homeland of the state-recognized Waccamaw Siouan tribe.
