The Market was built by Stewart Savage in the early 1900s and stood on Market Street directly behind the Masonic Lodge building. It was in place before 1915, when Mr. Ginetes was laid out there after a shooting spree and his own death. After it was found to have been built partly on an adjoining lot, it was moved one block west to the north side of Fisher Street, with Mr. Herbie Gottschalk dragging the building to its new site using horse or mule teams. Over the years it was used primarily as a meat market, successively operated by the Mahavier family, Brown Watkins, and Asher and Sal Owlsley, and for a brief period in the early 1930s it also served as a barber shop. By the time the River's End Garden Club moved it to the park, it had stood unused for a number of years and was owned by the Sisk family; Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Parham donated it to the Garden Club, and Mrs. Parham was the former Allie Jay Sisk.
