The Printzhof site on Tinicum Island marks the residence and headquarters of Johan Björnsson Printz, who moved the capital of New Sweden there in 1643 from Fort Christina and established Fort Gothenburg beside it. After a fire destroyed the settlement two years later, the house was rebuilt as a larger two-story log residence with Swedish lumber, glass windows, and rich draperies, reflecting the colony’s seat of government. The estate remained in the Printz family after the Dutch captured New Sweden in 1655, notably through Armegott Printz, whose contested ownership was upheld in 1672. Today, surviving stone foundations preserve one of the Delaware Valley’s earliest European colonial centers.
