Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been held as prisoners of war, and others have remained listed as Missing In Action since the time of the American Revolution. Some died from disease and starvation, some perished in death marches, some were tortured, and some were lost forever from their families. All were deprived of their liberties so that others might enjoy theirs. The National Prisoner of War Missing in Action Memorial was declared as such by President George W. Bush on December 10, 2004.
