Savannah’s Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum centers the city’s civil rights history and the wider African American experience in Georgia. Named for Reverend Ralph Mark Gilbert, pastor of First African Baptist Church and a Savannah NAACP leader, it occupies a 1914 building that once housed an African American bank and later the local NAACP headquarters. Opened in 1996, it presents local activism, major events, and movement leaders through photographs, interactive exhibits, and recreated spaces such as the Azalea Room at Levy’s Department Store. In 2020, the museum added the Eloria S. Gilbert Archives, preserving Gilbert’s papers and records of NAACP work in Savannah and across Georgia.
