In 1864, Caleb and Nancy Magill and their six children were traveling in a wagon train from Brown County, Kansas, to Dallas, Oregon, when after leaving Fort Laramie their three-year-old daughter Ada fell ill with dysentery. Her condition worsened at Deer Creek Station, and an hour before dawn on July 3, 1864, she died. Dressed in her "Sunday best tiny calico dress," she was buried on a small rise of ground just south of this place. In 1912, when a new highway under construction was to pass directly over her grave, her remains were moved thirty feet north to this spot. Wyoming state engineer Loren Clark Bishop fashioned the headstone that marks the final resting place of this pioneer child, and the Oregon Trail lies about fifty feet south of this spot.
