Charles H. Darden was born in Greene County in 1854 and arrived in Wilson after the Civil War. In 1875, he established here the first African-American funeral business in Wilson, and his son, C.L. Darden, later diversified it. The business operated for more than 100 years, and a local high school was named in his honor.
