Confederate forces under General Robert Hoke occupied the Sugar Loaf Line north of Fort Fisher as Union forces advanced on January 13, 1865. These man made earthworks, running north from Fort Fisher, remain as evidence of Confederate soldiers' efforts to defend the City of Wilmington, the last remaining major port of the blockade runners. With the fall of Wilmington, the Union blockade of southern ports was complete.
