Begun in 1792, St. Michael's Parish was the oldest parish in Nelson County and the third oldest west of the Alleghenies. It was the home parish of Catherine Spalding, founder of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (SCN); Frances Gardiner, fourth Superior of SCNS; Richard Miles, the first bishop in the state of Tennessee; Felix Newton Pitt, a trailblazer in education; and Grace Newton Simpson, a notable Catholic leader of the 19th century. Stephen Badin, the first priest ordained in the U.S., was the first priest here, and Guy Chabrat, the first priest ordained in Kentucky, was the first resident pastor. The first Catholic parish in Louisville was a mission of St. Michael's, and that parish is known today as the Cathedral of the Assumption. The church moved one mile east of this spot in 1831, and the current church was built in 1883.
