Exploration Place is a nonprofit science museum on the Arkansas River in Wichita’s Delano neighborhood and one of the city’s main hands-on science and family-learning venues. Formed from a plan in the 1980s to unite earlier local museums, it opened in 2000 after a capital campaign and support from Velma Lunt Wallace, the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County, and other donors. Designed by Moshe Safdie, the 100,000-square-foot complex includes an island building, a large dome theater, live science space, and exhibits tied to aviation, Kansas, and children’s STEM learning. It also serves as a civic gathering place through outreach, media, and outdoor public spaces.
