Shasta–Trinity National Forest in northern California is the state’s largest national forest, spanning about 3,454 square miles of mountain lakes, streams, rivers, and prominent landmarks including Mount Shasta and Shasta Lake. Formed from Shasta and Trinity National Forests, both created in 1905 and administratively combined in 1954, it also holds an important place in federal land-management history as the site of the first timber sale under the new U.S. Forest Service. Its varied terrain ranges from chaparral and oak woodland to alpine country, includes five wilderness areas and the Trinity River, and supports extensive recreation, trails, scenic drives, and historic Forest Service structures.
