Rocky Gorge is a waterfall and scenic picnic area on the Swift River in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest along the Kancamagus Highway. Known both for its falls and the roadside stop built around them, it has long drawn visitors as an easily reached scenic destination. The site is also associated with a longstanding ban on swimming in the falls, a rule linked to a near-fatal accident involving Dorothy Sparks in 1942 and to at least two later non-fatal accidents, each involving two people. It remains a popular stop valued for its river setting and convenient access from one of the White Mountains’ best-known roads.
