From 1861 to 1865, the Confederate dead of Wilcox County were honored as having given their lives for others, for the honor of Alabama, for the rights of states, and for the principles of the Union as these were understood to have been handed down by the fathers of the common country. Their deaths were praised as the crowning glory of their lives, and their memory was entrusted to enduring remembrance in song even after marble and monuments were gone. The tribute was erected on April 26, A.D. 1880 by the Ladies’ Memorial and Wilcox Monumental Associations.
