Pharis Hurst was a U.S. Army veteran of the Civil War who was discharged after losing an arm at the siege of Vicksburg. Born in Pennsylvania, he came to Texas after the war and was a farmer, teacher, and postmaster. He married first Melinde Beal and second Zilla Parker, had 4 children, and lived in Ozona from 1917 to 1927.
