In Tallahassee, this five-acre archaeological site marks the winter encampment of Hernando de Soto’s Spanish expedition near the Apalachee village of Anhaica in 1539–1540. After years of uncertainty about the camp’s location, state archaeologist Calvin Jones identified it in 1987 through 16th-century Spanish artifacts. Excavations uncovered more than 40,000 objects, including chain mail links, coins, olive jar fragments, glass trade beads, and a pig jawbone that matched records of swine brought by the expedition. These finds provided the first confirmed physical evidence of a de Soto site in North America and connect the place to some of the earliest documented encounters between Europeans and Native societies in the Southeast.
