Mendon Ponds Park, southeast of Rochester in Mendon and Pittsford, is Monroe County’s largest park at more than 2,500 acres and is renowned for terrain formed by glaciers, earning National Natural Landmark status in 1967. Monroe County began assembling the park in 1928 with the purchase of 1,400 acres. Its notable landforms include eskers, kames, and the Devil’s Bathtub kettle hole, beside a sphagnum moss peat bog with a floating island and unusual carnivorous plants. The park also supports rich wildlife, from birds and beavers to foxes and deer, while serving as a major recreation area with trails, fishing, horseback riding, skiing, and Wild Wings nearby.
