The Hernando de Soto expedition, sent to explore and claim the Southeast for Spain, crossed the Mississippi River on June 18, 1541, at a point in northwestern Mississippi between Sunflower Landing in Coahoma County to the south and Bass Landing in DeSoto County to the north.
