Near Monroe Hall and Colonial Beach in Virginia, this historic archaeological site preserves the birthplace and boyhood home landscape of James Monroe, where he spent his youth working the family farm before studying at the College of William & Mary and serving in the Continental Army. Excavations begun in 1976 uncovered the Monroe family home's 20-by-58-foot foundation, while 1845 etchings depict a modest four-room wooden farmhouse on a 500-acre property bordered by wetlands. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the site later expanded and was restored, and by 2021 it included a museum, reconstructed birthplace, trails, water access, and interpretive features connecting Monroe's rural beginnings to his national significance.
