In Onamia, Minnesota, this museum centers the history, culture, and contemporary life of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Opened in 1996 on a site long inhabited by Ojibwe people and later developed by D. H. Robbins and the Ayer family, it grew from property and collections donated to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1959. Its holdings include 2,200 historical artifacts such as bandolier bags, moccasins, and birch-bark baskets. Exhibits in English and Ojibwe feature the life-size “Four Seasons Room” dioramas and also explore pow-wow regalia, economic life, and the band’s continuing sovereignty and self-governance.
