On July 3, 1863, Union cavalry commanded by Brigadier General D. McM. Gregg engaged Confederate cavalry commanded by Major General J.E.B. Stuart. The Union forces included the 2d Brigade, 3d Cavalry Division under Brigadier General G. A. Custer, with the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 7th Michigan Cavalry; Union artillery included Randol's Light Battery E, 1st U.S. Artillery, Pennington's Light Battery M, 2nd U.S. Artillery, and 2d Sec. Light Battery H, 3d Penna. Union forces also included the 1st Brigade, 2d Cavalry Division under Colonel J. B. McIntosh, with the 3d Penna. Cavalry, 1st New Jersey Cavalry, and 1st Maryland Cavalry, and the 3d Brigade, 2d Cavalry Division under Colonel J. Irvin Gregg, with the 16th and 4th Penna. Cavalry, 1st Maine Cavalry, 10th New York Cavalry, 1st Mass Cavalry, Purnell Troop A, Md, Cavalry, and Co., A 1st Ohio. The Confederate forces included Hampton's Brigade under Brigadier General Wade Hampton, Fitz Lee's Brigade under Brigadier General Fitz Hugh Lee, Jenkins Brigade under Colonel M. J. Ferguson, W.H.F. Lee's Brigade under Colonel J.R. Chambliss, and the artillery of McGregor's Virginia Battery, Breathed's Maryland Battery, and Griffin's 2d Maryland Battery.
