Built in the late 1890s by Wingfield Terrell Cosby, Sr., his wife Drusilla, and their seven children, the Rock Store became a Tallapoosa County institution for more than half a century. Its distinctive facade was made of local rocks crudely stacked and joined with concrete. Bananas, bologna, and cigarette and soft drink advertisements featuring celebrities of the era hung from the rafters, while icy cold drinks and sliced hoop cheese remained popular with customers. After automobiles became more common, the owners added a gravity-fed gasoline pump that also drew children's interest. As nearby Lake Martin grew as a recreational destination, the store's popularity increased, and it became a favorite landmark for locals and visitors alike. It closed in 1957 after the deaths of the last two proprietors, Sam and Julius Cosby, and the building continued in other uses while remaining in the Cosby family.
