Davidsonville preserves the site of an early Arkansas frontier town on the Black River in northeastern Arkansas, where human use of the land stretches back to Native American occupation as early as 4,000 BC and later French colonial presence. Founded in 1815, the town quickly became a major stop on the Southwest Trail and gained the territory’s first post office, General Land Office, and courthouse, serving briefly as a political and commercial center. Its importance faded after the trail was rerouted, the land office moved, and the county seat shifted. By 1836 it was essentially abandoned, though its streets, square, building sites, cemeteries, and layered archaeological remains still survive.
