This building typifies classical Depression-era architecture and came out of the extensive federal construction programs of the 1930s. Its lobby oil murals were part of the New Deal's art in public places. In addition to housing many federal agencies, it served as the sixth location of Stockton's main post office. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and Stockton designated it Historic Landmark No. 38 in 1985.
