Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetlands area near Dover in Stewart County, Tennessee, along Lake Barkley on the Cumberland River. Encompassing 8,862 acres, it belongs to the United States National Wildlife Refuge system and was, as of 2006, the only refuge located entirely within Middle Tennessee. The refuge is made up largely of wetlands formed around backwaters and other low-lying habitat tied to the Cumberland River and Lake Barkley. Its importance lies in providing habitat for a wide variety of waterfowl and aquatic plant life, making it a significant stop and shelter in the region’s river and reservoir environment.
