Great North Mountain is a fifty-mile ridge in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, extending through Virginia and West Virginia between the Shenandoah Valley and the Allegheny Mountains. Much of its length forms the Virginia–West Virginia border, and its highest point is Mill Mountain at 3,299 feet on the Hardy County–Shenandoah County line in the George Washington National Forest. Highways crossing the ridge link communities on either side, while nearby trails and destinations make it a regional landmark. Known in colonial times by some settlers as the Devil's Backbone, the ridge received its present official name in 1967 to distinguish it from another North Mountain farther north.
