On December 9, 1837, United States Army Conductor B.B. Cannon and 330 Cherokee Treaty Party "Volunteers" camped near this site. Between 1838 and 1839, ten additional detachments led by Cherokees themselves passed through here on the Northern Route of the "Trail of Tears."
