Vroman's Nose, a prominent hill in Fulton near Middleburgh and Schoharie Creek in Schoharie Valley, has long been a landmark because of its distinctive profile and is now a popular hiking destination in upstate New York. Before British settlement, Iroquois people lived in the surrounding area, though not likely on the hill itself because it lacked a stable water supply. In the early eighteenth century the land was ceded to the Vroman family, giving the hill its name. The Lower Fort stood beneath it during the Revolutionary War, and local tradition links Timothy Murphy to the area. Its flat summit, the Dance Floor, was shaped by glacial movement.
