The Audubon structure is one of twenty stops along the Tidewater Power Electric Company's trolley line linking Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach. The nine-mile line was established in 1902 and became a vital link not only for its terminal points but also for suburban developments such as Winter Park, Oleander, and Audubon that sprang up along the route. The trolley system was a source of community pride and remained a picturesque aspect of the area until its final run on April 26, 1940. The trolley stop at Audubon Blvd. and Park Avenue was first built before 1911 and was replaced by the present structure in the early 1930s. It is now the last surviving example of its kind in southeastern North Carolina.
