Near Republic, Kansas, this preserved archaeological site contains the remains of a Pawnee village occupied by the Kitkehahki, or Republican, band, one of four known Kitkehahki sites in the Republican River valley. The village was used intermittently from the 1770s to the 1820s. Long thought to be the village visited by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike in 1806, it was later shown to be a different Kitkehahki settlement, but that mistaken identification helped protect the site from destruction. Archaeological investigations in the twentieth century uncovered an earth lodge and artifacts, and a museum was built around the lodge, preserving part of the village in place.
