Porcupine Butte is a summit on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota near Wounded Knee, rising 3,665 feet and named for the prickly pine trees on its top. Big Foot Trail passes nearby, and the butte now supports KILI Radio broadcast facilities and a fire watchtower. It is also closely linked to the events preceding the Wounded Knee Massacre. On December 28, 1890, near the butte, Spotted Elks's band of Miniconjou Lakota and accompanying Hunkpapa Lakota were intercepted by a detachment of the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment, escorted west to camp, and surrounded before the massacre the following day killed numerous people, including many women and children.
