Flint Ridge State Memorial preserves a Native American flint quarry in central Ohio where stone was extracted from hundreds of quarries for toolmaking and other uses over a long period. The ridge was a major source of flint found in the Vanport Limestone Member of the Allegheny Formation, dating to the Pennsylvanian period. Its greatest significance lies in the wide reach of Indigenous trade: Ohio flint from this ridge has been identified across eastern North America, as far west as present-day Kansas City and south around the Gulf of Mexico. The site endures as evidence of ancient industry, exchange networks, and the lasting importance of Ohio flint.
