This memorial honors the men lost in the U.S. Submarine Service, including the crews of 52 U.S. submarines and 3,505 submariners lost during World War II and the crews of USS Thresher, USS Cochino, USS Scorpion, and USS Stickleback lost after the war. It includes Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz's tribute to submarine personnel for never failing the nation in its days of peril and concludes with the farewell, “Sailors, rest your oars.” It also features a Mark 37 torpedo, an electrically propelled torpedo developed for the U.S. Navy after World War II that served as the primary U.S. submarine-launched anti-submarine torpedo from the early 1950s through the 1970s.
