On this site, the Corinne Opera House was erected in 1879 and for many years was the largest recreation center in Utah outside of Salt Lake City. Built of red pine lumber with square nails, it hosted leading stock companies bound for California on the new railroad, which stopped over and played to capacity houses. Among the players were Tom Thumb, Corinne Lavaunt, and Maude Adams. The building also served as a church, dance hall, public auditorium, the first non-sectarian school in Utah, and a venue for picture shows. It remained in constant use until 1952, when it was razed.
