George Michael Troup lived here. Governor of Georgia from 1823 to 1827, he was born in 1780 at McIntosh's Bluff on the Tombigbee River in a part of Georgia that is now Alabama, graduated from Princeton in 1797, and was admitted to the bar at Savannah in 1800. He served in the Georgia Legislature from 1801 to 1803, in the U.S. Congress from 1807 to 1815, and in the U.S. Senate from 1816 to 1818 and from 1829 to 1833. When the federal government failed to carry out its agreement to remove the Indians from Georgia, Troup warned the President in 1825, "We have exhausted the argument. We stand by our arms". The Indians were removed.
