History
The Michigan History Museum, in downtown Lansing near the Michigan State Capitol, opened in March 1989 as part of the Michigan Library and Historical Center. It brings together the state history museum with the Library of Michigan, the Michigan State Archives, and the Michigan Law Library. Its galleries focus on Michigan’s land, people, and social and cultural heritage, covering Native American life, Euro-American trade and settlement, major industries such as logging and automobiles, and the state’s part in World War I and World War II. As the flagship of the statewide Michigan History Museum System, it remains a major institution for sharing Michigan’s history through exhibits and public programs.
