In 1822, James and Sophia Clemens settled on 387 acres on the Ohio side of the border, and Thornton and Caroline Alexander settled on 320 acres on the Indiana side of the border, beginning the Greenville Colored Settlement, later called Longtown. The community included Bunker Hill School, McCown Home, a log cabin, the James and Sofia Farm, Collins Home, ball diamonds, a tavern, the Clemens Saw Mill, A.M.E. churches, Bethel Wesleyan Church, the Clemens Gravel Pit, R.V.F.V.s Goens Store, the Long Blacksmith Shop, Reed Bros. Store #2, the Holland Ball Diamond, Bass Cemetery, Tamico School, the Zebediah Bass home, School #4 Community Center, Clemens Cemetery, the Jacob Bass Log Cabin, the William Jones home, Masonic Hall, a post office, Patten Stokes Blacksmith, Reed Bro. Store #1, a gravel pit swimming hole, Alexander Cemetery, and Union Literary Institute.
