USS Wisconsin, BB-64, is an Iowa-class fast battleship built for speed and heavy firepower as the U.S. prepared for possible war with Japan. Completed in 1944, she was among the Navy’s largest and fastest battleships and carried powerful guns, heavy armor, and wartime floatplanes. In World War II she served in the Pacific with Admiral William F. Halsey’s fast carrier forces, fighting in the Philippines, at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and bombarding Japan in 1945. She later fought in Korea, returned to service after modernization in 1986, and took part in Operation Desert Storm before final decommissioning in 1991.
