In Vincennes, Indiana, on the Wabash River, George Rogers Clark National Historical Park marks the believed site of Fort Sackville, where on February 25, 1779, Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark captured the fort and took British lieutenant governor Henry Hamilton prisoner. That victory, the climax of Clark’s Illinois Campaign, helped support the United States claim to the Northwest Territory in the 1783 Treaty of Paris. Although no Revolutionary-era remains survive and the fort’s exact location was lost as Vincennes grew, the site became a major memorial landscape, later transferred to the National Park Service in 1966, honoring Clark and supporters Francis Vigo and Father Pierre Gibault.
