Chantry Flat, in Big Santa Anita Canyon above Arcadia and Sierra Madre, is one of the main gateways into the San Gabriel Mountains and a heavily used recreation area with picnic grounds and major trailheads, including the eastern end of the Gabrielino Trail. It was named for Charley Chantry, an Iowa-born packer and prospector who came to Sierra Madre in 1905 and spent enough time on this formerly named Poison Oak Flat that it took his name permanently. Road access reached the site shortly before his death in 1936, and later Forest Service and Civilian Conservation Corps development added recreation and utility facilities. The area also preserves older mountain traditions through Adams’ Pack Station, Sturtevant’s Camp, and a rare magneto crank phone system.
