Camp Atchison Historic Site was named for Captain Charles B. Atchison, assistant commissary and acting ordnance officer on the staff of General H. H. Sibley. The camp served as a base for Sibley’s operations to the Missouri River in pursuit of the Sioux Indians and was occupied from July 18 to August 12, 1863. One-third of Sibley’s forces occupied the camp, which sheltered his surplus men and equipment during his campaign to the west. George E. Brent of Company D, 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers, was accidentally shot on July 20 and buried on a high hill southwest of the camp, and Samuel Wanamaker of Company E, 10th Minnesota Infantry, died of sickness on August 9, 1863, and was buried outside the north edge of the camp.
