Before the Gold Rush, these lands were home to the Miwok and Maidu tribes, with summer camps and villages scattered throughout the area. The Miwok village of CHU'NI, also known as TGON'O by local Maidu, lies today beneath the waters of Jenkinson's Lake in the Arrowhead campground at Sly Park. Indians of the Sly Park area hosted a major annual event that brought traders from the Wintun, Shastan, Plains Miwok, Costanoan, and Yokut tribes, while the Mono, Washoe, and Paiute came from the Eastern Sierra passes, with four thousand or more Native Americans attending each year. Bark houses were common among foothill Indians and remained in use by local Indians along Stark's Grade and Sturdevant Ridge into the early 1900s before vanishing in twentieth-century El Dorado County forever.
