Built in 1891 in Athens, Georgia, the Washington W. King Bridge originally connected College Street and downtown Athens with farmland across the Oconee River. Damage from major floods in 1910 and 1963 left the covered bridge severely affected, and after the later flood it was preserved by being moved to Stone Mountain Park. Donated for $1, dismantled in 1965, and transported about 60 miles, it was reassembled on new cement and granite piers to serve as a road link to an island in Stone Mountain Lake. Renamed in 2019 for builder Washington W. King, it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
