Bronte, the eastern gateway to the Permian Basin in Coke County, was called Oso and Broncho in the early 1880's. It was formally named for English novelist Charlotte Bronte in 1890 and incorporated in 1907. Its basic agricultural economy was predominantly ranching, and it has been the site of major oil and gas development since 1948.
