The Southport Plank Road from Elmira to the state line dates to 1848 and was marked by tollgates at Lake Street, McBride, 1122 Penoa Ave, Gosper, Holly, and the state line. People associated with this area included Leon D. “Windy” Smith, 1889—1966, a pioneer air mail pilot and Army Air Force flight instructor during World War I—II; Clara “Babe” Cook, 1921—1996, a pro softball pioneer; famed artist Julius Lars Hoftrup, 1873—1954; and the mills of Southport.
