Lea's Chapel United Methodist Church was probably the earliest organized church in Person County. In 1744, the Earl of Granville's agents of England granted the land to William Lea to build the church. It was formed as an Anglican chapel in 1750 on South Hyco Creek. As a recognized landmark in this frontier region, it was known as Chapel Church. It became Methodist after 1784. Francis Asbury preached here as one of the first two bishops during the American Revolutionary War. It is believed soldiers are buried here with gravesites marked by rocks. The church was the first organized church in Person County, tracing its beginnings before the establishment of Person County in 1792.
