Military
Payne’s Farm was the site of the deadliest fighting of the Mine Run Campaign. The battlefield’s remote location and long history of agricultural use have made it one of the best preserved Civil War sites in America. The ground there included about 500 yards of thick woods and brush, beyond which lay a cleared field owned by a man named Payne, and the density of the undergrowth and the absence of roads made movement to designated positions difficult.
