Rosebud Battlefield in southeastern Montana preserves much of the ground where the Battle of the Rosebud was fought on June 17, 1876, a turning point in the Great Sioux War. There, Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne fighters led by Crazy Horse attacked General George Crook’s forces and stopped one arm of a planned three-pronged U.S. campaign against Native villages in the Bighorn region. After about six hours of fighting over nearly 3 miles along Rosebud Creek, the battle ended in a tactical stalemate, but Crook withdrew rather than continue to his rendezvous, helping leave George Armstrong Custer exposed to defeat at the Little Bighorn a week later. The battlefield is also remembered through the Northern Cheyenne story of Buffalo Calf Road Woman rescuing her wounded brother, Chief Comes in Sight.
