Sandy Neck Light, on Sandy Neck in West Barnstable, Massachusetts, marks the entrance to Barnstable Harbor and reflects the long importance of this coast to navigation. First established in 1826, the present lighthouse tower was built in 1857 and strengthened in the 1880s to withstand its exposed coastal setting. The light station was discontinued in 1931 and replaced by a skeleton tower that remained in service until 1952. After many decades without an active light, Sandy Neck Light was relit in 2007 as a private aid to navigation, reconnecting the historic lighthouse with its original maritime role.
