El Sal del Rey lay directly to the north and, upon Spanish discovery in 1746, was claimed for the King under the old law that salt was money. People from a wide area got salt there. In 1863-64 its works aided Texas in the Civil War. Later disputes over El Sal del Rey established Texas laws for private ownership of minerals.
